KAWARTHA ROTARYDONATES BUDDY BENCHES TO AREA SCHOOLS-2018

Former Kawartha Rotarian Donna Geary and her son Nate Loch initiated the Buddy Bench program and St. Catherine’s Catholic Elementary School was the first recipient.
Nate got involved with the program from his past experiences of both inclusiveness and exclusiveness in both elementary and high school – of being both the victim and the perpetrator of bullying. “The Buddy Bench is something that I really wish I had growing up, as it’s something that’s intent is to celebrate friendship with those we may not know and is a good social tool for the kids of Roger Neilson to combat the problem of bullying. By understanding one another, we find similarities we might not have found, and unlikely friendships can form from even the smallest of encounters. I hope that the Buddy Bench helps create some of these unlikely friendships and helps keep as a reminder that we all could be on that bench at one point in our lives. Looking for a friend, looking for someone to listen, to simply just be a presence even for a moment.”  Stated Nate. The club has donated 12 benches to area schools.

FREE LITTLE LIBRARIES-2015

The Rotary Club of Peterborough-Kawartha has always focused on promoting literacy, both on a community and international level. The libraries are essentially small structures erected either in an indoor space, or outdoors, where anyone is welcome to take a book to read and replace it with one from their personal library to share with others. The Free Little Libraries have become a gathering places for friends and neighbours to share their favourite literature and stories.

HAITI PROJECTS-2010

World Community Service Committee has worked with projects in Haiti in the past.  One project was an orphanage in Jacmel and the other, a school in Marbiel.   Although international projects are somewhat a frustrating experience, the committee felt it was important to continue given the devastating earthquake which only compounded the problems for Haitians and the committee.
